The single most common mistake we see is pairing a brand-new 4K@120Hz TV with an old HDMI cable and blaming the panel when the picture stutters. The cable is a bottleneck far more often than the screen.
Match the standard to the source
For 4K at 60Hz and HDR, any certified High Speed (HDMI 2.0, 18Gbps) cable is enough. For 4K at 120Hz, 8K, VRR or eARC to a soundbar, you need a certified Ultra High Speed (HDMI 2.1, 48Gbps) cable — nothing less.
- Streaming a Firestick or Apple TV: High Speed is plenty
- PS5 / Xbox Series X at 120Hz: Ultra High Speed, no exceptions
- Runs over 5 metres: switch to an active optical cable
Certification beats price
Look for the certification hologram, not the price tag. A £15 certified 2.1 cable outperforms a £120 uncertified one every time.
If it does not carry the certification logo, you are trusting a sticker.
